Spike belt used to stop fleeing 19-year old driver

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday had to use a spike belt to stop a fleeing driver.

Members of the DRPS North Division, at around 1:13 am, received a call for dangerous driving. They tried to stop a 19-year old driver of a speeding black sedan along Simcoe Street and Highway 12. He failed to stop at red signals and stop signs, and while fleeing almost rammed a police car.

A pursuit ensued and the vehicle was stopped using a spike belt at Simcoe Street near Brock Concession Road 7, police said.

The driver from Beaverton is charged with Dangerous operation of a conveyance and Flight from Peace Officer. He was released on an undertaking.

Oshawa Ride Checks

Meanwhile, in Oshawa, members of the DRPS Central West Division stopped some 500 vehicles at Simcoe and Niagara streets during RIDE checks on April24-25.

A 37-year old man was issued a ‘warn’ on an approved screening device. He received a 3-day licence suspension.

A 24-year old man was charged with impaired driving. He had his vehicle impounded for seven days and a 90-day licence suspension.
