Strong winds bring trees down, Clarington road closed

Strong winds yesterday brought trees and branches down in some parts of Durham, at times disrupting power supply.

Holt Road in Clarington was closed between Nash Road and Taunton Road as a tree had come down and pulled down hydro lines, said Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) East Division.

Southern Durham yesterday experienced gusts of up to 74kmh just after midday, according to Environment Canada.

Meanwhile, the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), said high winds can bring down powerlines and cause other electrical hazards.

Stay 10 metres back from downed wires, call 911 and the local electric utility. Never attempt to move downed wires, it emphasized.

ESA has provided safety tips on its website.
