Suspect grapples with officer, flees twice, but…

Durham Police yesterday said drugs and a firearm were located in a vehicle after a police pursuit.

On Wednesday, November 22 at about 8:50 pm, a member of the Traffic Services Regional Ride team observed a vehicle travelling at an extremely high rate of speed in excess of 150 kmh, on the Westbound 401 Highway near Simcoe Street in Oshawa.

The officer caught up to the vehicle at the Stevenson Road exit and initiated a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated along Stevenson Road, police said.

The suspect vehicle struck a curb and lost control, coming to a stop on the roadway. The officer removed the suspect from the driver’s seat and a physical struggle ensued. The suspect resisted arrest and fled on foot. He was located hiding in bushes a short distance away and was arrested by assisting officers. A search of the suspect vehicle revealed a large bag of cannabis, a firearm, ammunition, and stolen licence plates.

The 26-year old from North York has been charged and was held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.

Anyone with new information about this incident is asked to contact Cst. Valeyev of Central East Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2494.
