Take time to appreciate your school crossing guards

Today is School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, and the Municipality of Clarington and Township of Scugog have issued statement thanking all of neighbourhood crossing guards for their commitment to helping our children get to and from school safely every day.

Clarington asked residents to join in recognizing this important role in the community, and remember these tips when approaching a school crosswalk:

  • Stop when a school crossing guard raises their stop sign.
  • Take notice of whether a crossing guard is on duty, and slow down when approaching school crossing locations.
  • Obey the law. Remain stopped until both the children and crossing guard have completely exited the roadway.
  • Proceed with caution. Obey posted speed limits, and observe all “No Stopping” and “No Parking” signs. Park in designated areas only.

Clarington employs 37 adult crossing guards who ensure the safe crossing of students at 34 locations throughout Clarington. “We encourage students and parents to take some time and thank the crossing guards for keeping our kids safe,” said a statement.

The Township of Scugog too asked residents to join in celebrating the School Crossing Guards across Ontario in this 3rd annual event.

Send a shout out to your favourite Crossing Guard…Help us recognize these individuals, whose assistance helps young residents with their active and safe daily travel to and from school.

Support your local School Crossing Guards by:

  • Guard signals you to stop; all cyclists and drivers must stop
  • Understand and follow the posted speed limits, especially in school zones
  • Always check before turning at intersections
  • Remain stopped until all pedestrians and guard have cleared the crossing. It is the Law.
  • Do not drop kids off in NO Stopping and NO parking zones
