Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), and other authorities, have issued warnings over safety on water as the summer weekend gets underway.
“Our Marine Unit is deploying on Lake Scugog and Lake Ontario tonight with a focused approach to water safety and sober boating,” DRPS Traffic Services said Friday. “Our team is equipped with the same tools they have on the road – approved screening devices and field sobriety tests. Please boat safely.”
Ajax Fire and Emergency Services urged residents to “stay sober in, on, and around the water”.
It said alcohol consumption is a factor in many water-related fatalities.
“Both alcohol and cannabis use impair balance, judgment, and reflexes. Stay sober when in, on or around the water,” it said.
Meanwhile, DRPS posted a video saying it is a stark reminder to never drink and drive, whether it be on the roadways or on the water. If you suspect someone is driving or boating impaired, call 9-1-1.
