Thousands across Durham hit by power outage

Late on the evening of May 26, Oshawa Power experienced a widespread outage affecting more than 12,000 customers, or 20 per cent of its customer base.

The utility said crews worked hard to reroute power to affected customers and have their service restored in under one hour.

The outage was caused by a loss of supply from Hydro One to their Thornton Transformer Station.

“Our team was able to reroute supply to the affected areas through two other local Transformer Stations while Hydro One worked to remedy the issue on their end. We would like to thank all of our customers affected by the event for their patience,” said Oshawa Power.

Hydro One said it was working with Elexicon Energy and Oshawa Power to restore power to customers in Whitby, Oshawa, Ajax and Pickering as quickly and safely as possible.

“Crews continue to investigate the cause of the outage on our system. We thank everyone for their continued patience.”

All power was later restored.

Crews continued to investigate the cause, which was not announced till late last night.

Hydro One scheduled maintenance combined with an unforeseen equipment failure outside of our territory knocked out the primary supply to our local substations, said Oshawa Power.

Ivano Labricciosa, President and CEO of Oshawa Power said in a tweet: “We are working on a major power outage in Oshawa that is a loss of supply from Hydro One. It is affecting 20% of Oshawa and major areas from Peterborough to Pickering we are told. The cause is being worked on but we are working to rerouting power on our system to get all restore.”

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) had to get involved. “Tonight officers from @DRPSCEDiv responded to numerous areas affected by a power outage in Oshawa. Thanks to @OshawaPower it has been restored. A reminder, in the event of a power outage treat all intersections with flashing or completely non functioning lights as all way stops.”

Officers from the West Division reported a motor vehicle collision at Brock Road/Taunton Road in Pickering as a result a power outage primarily affecting northern Pickering/Ajax.
