The Town of Ajax has announced new automated speed cameras will be installed at three locations to deter speeding. It will host virtual open house on the issue on November 30.
To improve safety, enforce speed limits and reduce collisions, the town is introducing a new Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program in designated community safety zones (CSZ). The program is part of Durham Region’s Vision Zero strategy, and will see ASE cameras deployed and rotated through the Town’s 12 community safety zones.
The first three locations scheduled for ASE camera deployment are:
- Delaney Drive – between Church Street and Ravenscroft Road
- Williamson Drive E – between Warner Drive and Audley Road
- Magill Drive – between Westney Road and Coles Avenue
As per provincial requirements, Municipal Speed Enforcement – Coming Soon signs have been installed at the three locations 90 days prior to camera deployment.
“Community and road safety is a key priority of Ajax Council. Automated Speed Enforcement is a modern enforcement tool being deployed that is proven to improve safety and enforce speed limits. The Town’s ASE program includes the use of mobile cameras that will take a photo of a vehicle’s license plate that is moving faster than the regulated speed limit. As drivers, we must obey speed limits, slow down and be aware of our surroundings, keeping our roads safe is all of our responsibility,” said Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier.
“This speed enforcement measure in combination with radar message boards, ongoing public engagement, traffic engineering improvements and additional police enforcement are designed to encourage a change in driver behaviour and improve safety in our community safety zones, where we see a higher numbers of vulnerable road users. As a proud member of the Region’s Vision Zero committee, I am regularly updated on the success of ASE programs changing driver behavior across the region,” added Regional Councillor Marilyn Crawford, Ward 1.
