Traffic Alert: Roadworks planned across Bowmanville, Courtice

The Municipality of Clarington has announced roadworks in Bowmanville and Courtice, which may impact traffic flows.

The municipality said it will be implementing accessibility improvements on various intersections from mid-April to June.

Work includes replacing concrete curbs and sidewalks, installing tactile plate walking surface indicators, upgrades to pedestrian signals and improving line painting and signage.

The following intersections are scheduled for improvements:

  • Longworth Avenue and Scugog Street intersection, Bowmanville
  • Nash Road and Trulls Road intersection, Courtice

Pedestrian traffic may be rerouted during replacement of concrete curb and sidewalk approaches. Vehicle traffic will be maintained during construction.

Road closures off Liberty Street

Starting Monday, May 6, the municipality said it will begin work to improve the roads and infrastructure on Brown Street, Albert Street, and Victoria Street, just off Liberty Street in Bowmanville.

The work is expected to be completed by September 2024, and includes:

  • Local storm sewer installation
  • Local watermain replacement, including water services
  • Removal of existing road asphalt and road base
  • Subdrain installation
  • Construction of new road base
  • Curb and gutter installation
  • Driveway apron reinstatement
  • Concrete sidewalk improvements
  • Base asphalt placement
  • Landscape restoration and tree protection/planting

The following roads will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the work:

  • Brown Street, from Queen Street to Victoria Street
  • Victoria Street, from Liberty Street to Ontario Street
  • Albert Street, from Liberty Street to Brown Street

Access to properties for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be maintained for residents, except for very short periods. During construction, a temporary water supply system will be in place for affected homes. Crews will ensure waste collection and mail delivery services are uninterrupted.

New all-way stops

The municipality is implementing new all-way stops at several intersections between mid-April and June.

The following intersections are transitioning to all-way stops:

  • Aspen Springs Drive at West Side Drive
  • Bons Avenue at Gimblett Drive and Honeyman Drive
  • Mearns Avenue at Longworth Avenue
  • Rhonda Boulevard at Lawrence Gate
  • Sandringham Drive at Strathallan Drive
  • Sandringham Drive at Glenabbey Drive
  • Trulls Road at George Reynolds Drive

Advisory signs are in place to let drivers know of the upcoming change. The new stop signs have been installed but will remain covered until the pavement markings have been added, the municipality said.
