Tuesday thunderstorm downs trees, power lines

The brief – but severe – thunderstorm that hit Durham yesterday afternoon downed some power lines and trees, according to municipality statements.

Environment Canada had warned of possible severe thunderstorms with strong winds. Residents were asked to remove debris from catch basins; move inside/secure items that may blow away; place waste/recycling containers to the curb at the last minute and collect them as soon as was possible.

The Township of Scugog asked residents to be aware of multiple reports of trees and power lines down in the township. “Exercise caution when travelling about as we dispatch staff to those areas,” said a township tweet yesterday.

Meanwhile, Oshawa Power too urged residents to report power outages, trees and tree limbs down, streetlights out, flooding or debris blocking a roadway.

It reported a few power outages in North Oshawa.

Due to the inclement weather forecast, all morning playground program locations were cancelled for Tuesday from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, said a city tweet.
