Unexpected twist of Rogers outage… for Durham Police

Rogers outage yesterday morning had an unexpected overload on Durham Police communications as affected residents called 911 to report the outage.

“We understand that many of our community members are having network issues. If you need to call 9-1-1 for an emergency please use a landline or another phone network,” said a Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) tweet yesterday.

“Don’t call 9-1-1 to have us fix your phone issue. Call us if you or someone you know has an emergency…,” it added with almost a hint of desperation.

Meanwhile, Rogers said: “We know how important it is for our customers to stay connected. We are aware of issues currently affecting our networks and our teams are fully engaged to resolve the issue as soon as possible. We will continue to keep you updated as we have more information to share”.

Several municipalities reported that electronic money transaction via debit or credit cards were not working.

However, most of them offered residents free Wi-Fi at their facilities via other internet exchanges.

Whitby can get you online! Wifi is available at all town recreation facilities, Whitby Library and Town Hall during this outage (and any other time, too), said a Whitby tweet.

Clarington too said public Wi-Fi is up and running at Clarington’s community centres, including Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, Diane Hamre Recreation Complex and South Courtice Arena.

Earlier, it had reported that due to the nationwide Rogers outage, debit and credit card payments were temporarily unavailable at Clarington’s community centres. Until the issue is resolved, residents can attend our drop-in activities at no charge, it said.

Ajax too reported experiencing issues with phone and internet services due to the Rogers outage, while Pickering Public Library announced its locations have computer stations, loanable laptops and a variety of seating with Internet.

Transit, Schools, Hospitals

Transit, schools, and hospitals too were affected with GO Transit announcing that some parts of its system were affected by yesterday morning’s network outage.

“Fares cannot be purchased using debit and credit and e-tickets may be unavailable. However, our Contact Centre and transit safety dispatch lines are fully functional to take customer calls,” it said.

Durham District School Board (DDSB) alerted its online summer school students that all internet, school phones, and email services were unavailable.

Lakeridge Health said the Rogers outage was impacting all calls to and from the hospital. “Thank you for your patience. We are working with Rogers to fix the issue as quickly as possible”.

Elexicon Energy said it experienced technical difficulties due to the Rogers network outage. “If you have an important or urgent matter, please call this temporary number: 905-668-8480”.
