Uxbridge marking 150th birthday of Lucy Maud Montgomery

This year is the 150th anniversary of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s birth and Downtown Uxbridge is celebrating with a free Summer Social event.

Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables, lived in Uxbridge from 1911-1926.

Visitors are invited to the historical Downtown Uxbridge on July 21 between 11 am-2 pm and join the celebrations. The theme for the Year of Maud is Hats, Cats & Flowers. In a nod to Lucy Maud’s love of hats, guests are invited to wear their best hats or bonnets for the event or make their own period-style hats during the event.

Special guests Anne of Green Gables and Lucy Maud Montgomery will be at various locations downtown and at the Farmer’s Market to meet fans and pose for photos. True fans can enter the Anne of Green Gables look-a-like contest taking place at Blue Heron Books, said a township announcement.

A free historical walking tour at 12 pm will showcase the historic architecture and interesting stories from the past. Preston Galleries is offering free face painting. Guests can create a bookmark at the Maud Makerspace at the BIA hut in the Downtown parkette. The Lucy Maud Montgomery Society is presenting a ‘Guess the Gadget” activity- participate to see how many items from 150 years ago you recognize!

Uxbridge’s award winning Uxbridge Farmers’ Market, open between 9 am and 2 pm, will host children’s activities, live entertainment, food, handmade goods and the best of seasonal produce. Admission is free. Pick up a visitors map of market vendors who are putting on a special Lucy Maud Montgomery twist in recognition of the 150th anniversary.

The Uxbridge BIA is presenting the Uxbridge Summer Treat Trail – a collection of Uxbridge merchants that are offering refreshing Anne of Green Gables themed treats. Pick up a map at local retailers. Watch storefront windows to see historical artifacts from the collections belonging to the Lucy Maud Montgomery Society and decorated window displays. Try to improve your penmanship, seek and find with a family scavenger hunt, or listen to a themed story reading at the Uxbridge Library.

Make the Summer Social part of a day-trip and check out other activities and Maud inspired sites (some require admission fees) including the free Lucy Maud Montgomery Trail, The Uxbridge Historical Centre (featuring a book-binding workshop and a Lucy Maud Montgomery exhibit), Leaskdale Manse (home of Lucy Maud Montgomery), and more.
