Whitby mayor expects more political stunts in months ahead

Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy

Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy has warned of more false accusations and political stunts in coming months stemming from the disruptive events of the council meeting on October 7.

“Tonight, I want to speak openly and directly about the events of the past two months—the controversy and political infighting that have distracted this council from the important work we were elected to do,” she said in an open letter issued yesterday.

During the October 7 meeting, allegations of racism were “insinuated” against the council by Regional Councillor Chris Leahy, who was then asked to apologize or leave the chamber. As he refised to do either, the meeting was adjourned briefly. He further alleged that a “private” council meeting was held during the intermission without him and Regional Councillor Steve Yamada (see below).

Since October, both Regional Councillor Leahy and Mayor Roy have been in a continuing battle of words (see below).

Mayor Roy said since October, two very serious allegations have been leveled against members of the Whitby Council. First, the claim that a secret meeting was held in violation of the Municipal Act. Second, the allegation that the actions of council members are driven by racism.

“Let me be crystal clear: both of these allegations are baseless. The report on [the] night’s agenda unequivocally confirms that no closed meeting took place on October 7th, and there was no violation of the Municipal Act. I am equally confident that a subsequent investigation will disprove the second allegation.”

Personal Ambition

She said these accusations are not about protecting taxpayers, strengthening governance, or advancing democracy. ‘They are about personal ambition and political gamesmanship. They are self-serving distractions when we should be focused on selfless service.

“What we are witnessing is American-style negative politics—designed to sow chaos, confusion, and distrust. This strategy, which seeks to erode the credibility of this council and the hardworking staff who serve our town, has no place in Whitby,” said Mayor Roy.

Political Stunts

“And yet, I fully expect that more false accusations and political stunts will follow in the weeks and months ahead,” she added.

“We are now halfway through this council term, and my intent is to spend the next two years working day in and day out for our community. I will continue working on the priorities that matter most to our residents—economic development, housing, supporting vulnerable community members, revitalizing our waterfront and downtowns, boosting tourism, strengthening infrastructure – and so much more. Just last week, I released a 2024 year-in-review newsletter that summarizes the incredible things that have been accomplished in Whitby over the past year. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’re doing – and I know there is more work to be done,” she said.

“If others on this council choose to engage in division and distraction, that is their choice. But let me assure you, it will not distract me from leading with integrity, staying focused, and continuing to deliver results for Whitby,” she added.
