The reverberations of the October 9, 2024 Whitby Council meeting in which insinuations of racism and discrimination were raised, are still echoing with council now directing the town clerk to work on the recommendations of an independent legal inquiry.
The workplace investigation report from Bernardi Human Resources Law, specifically related to the Council Code of Conduct, was released earlier this month.
Staff has been directed to work with the town’s integrity commissioner to review the recommendations. This includes clarifying “how and in what forum allegations of discrimination should be raised.”
Subject to council considering changes to the Code of Conduct, the motion directs the town’s head of organizational effectiveness to review and make corresponding amendments to the Respect in the Workplace Policy to reinforce expectations to eliminate bias and discrimination, said a town notice.
Council also committed to participate in education and training on inclusion, diversity, equity, and anti-racism, which will be conducted in early 2026.
