$1.25 million grant gets Clarington Hospice going

The Municipality of Clarington announced it is providing the financial support needed to begin the construction of Marigold Hospice Care in Newcastle.

Clarington Council voted to provide an extra $1.25 million grant to Durham Region Hospice – Clarington, on September 25.

“After years of work, this much-needed residential hospice is on the brink of being able to break ground, and we’re closing the gap! I am proud to say that thanks to council’s compassionate support, local health care will soon improve for our residents,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.

For those at the end of life, the hospice will provide comfort, care, and compassion in a home-like setting and support for their families. When open, the facility will address a significant gap in the current health care system in Clarington, said a municipal statement.

Through the challenges of the pandemic and escalating construction costs, a dedicated volunteer team has worked for years to raise some $8 million in donations for the Clarington hospice fundraising campaign. Clarington’s $1.25 million grant is the final push needed to build this project.
