11-year old goes on joy ride with 12-year old passenger

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said officers responded to a possible impaired call Sunday night – but instead found a joy ride by an 11-year old driver and his 12-year-old passenger.

Luckily there were no injuries to everyone involved, but there was lots of property damage to several fences and the Hyundai they took.

On March 20th at about 6:30 pm, a call came in for a possible impaired driver leaving the gas station at Taunton and Thickson. The vehicle was registered to a book Brooklin address, said a police statement.

Officers from Central West Division were making their way to the owner’s address when a vehicle traveling south on Anderson Street shot past the officers at a high rate of speed, doing approximately 150 kmh. The officers activated their emergency equipment and made a U-turn to attempt to stop the vehicle. A pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle returned into Fawcett Avenue, lost control and went through a fence into a backyard. The car returned to the road went almost struck the responding officer head on. The second unit responded from Central West Division and the vehicle was pinned by the two responding officers on Anderson Street. The vehicle ended up smashing through another fence just prior to being pinned. The driver of the subject vehicle was 11-years old and was released to his mother’s custody. A 12-year old passenger was released to his father, said the statement.

No injuries were sustained as a result of the pursuit. There was minor damage to one cruiser.
