1,100 tickets in the one week of back-to-school blitz

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) concluded its annual ‘In the Zone’ traffic safety blitz around schools within Durham Region as students returned back to classes.

This year, more than 1,100 traffic tickets were issued during this blitz which included:

  • 527 speeding tickets,
  • 16 tickets for cell phone violations,
  • five tickets for stunt driving, and
  • 17 carless driving violations among others

Statistics for the 2024 September blitz were not provided.

The DRPS Traffic Services Branch, in conjunction with officers from all divisions, conducted a traffic enforcement campaign targeting school and community safety zones during the first week of back to school from September 2-5.

The ‘In The Zone’ campaign aims to ensure safety in school zones by promoting responsible driving through increased police presence and proactive traffic enforcement.

The DRPS thanked local school officials and members of the public for supporting this traffic initiative.

DRPS East Division monitored Clarington and east Oshawa to remind drivers to slow down and keep children safe in school zones.

They alone issued 386 tickets.

DRPS North Division officers were in school zones across Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog.

They issued 128 offence notices and 16 cautions.

Please slow down — kids’ safety comes first, police said.
