11,500 meals delivered to Durham residents in need

Purolator volunteers delivered the equivalent of 11,500 meals to Feed the Need in Durham (FTND) to support residents facing food insecurity.

Volunteers collected food donations from 21 participating schools in Durham Region through this year’s Purolator Tackle Hunger National Red Bag campaign. Running from September 21 to October 5, the food drive brought schools and families across Durham together to support their neighbours.

Participating schools sent students home with Purolator Red Bags for families to fill with non-perishable food donations. Purolator collected the filled bags and delivered them to FTND’s warehouse, where staff will sort the donations for distribution through its network of 70 community food programs.

Students’ Generosity Praised

“This is the second year we’ve run this campaign with the schools in Durham, and it was incredible to see students, families, educators and the staff support our efforts to help those facing food insecurity in the community,” said Steve Sidey, District Manager and Purolator Tackle Hunger champion. “Their generosity is at the heart of the success of this program, and we’re grateful to everyone who took part.”

“The need for food support in the Durham Region is at unprecedented levels, making community efforts like this especially important,” said Ben Earle, President and CEO of Feed the Need in Durham. “It’s encouraging to see young people helping neighbours facing food insecurity and becoming advocates in their own community. We’re grateful to Purolator for connecting that care with practical support for people who need food.”

The Durham Region food drive was part of Purolator’s fourth annual Purolator Tackle Hunger National Red Bag campaign. Throughout September and October, employees, customers and community members turned generosity into action through Red Bag food drives in 25 communities across Canada and the U.S.

Since its inception in 2003, Purolator Tackle Hunger has delivered more than 27 million meals to food banks across Canada.

Residents of the Durham Region can continue to support Food Banks Canada by filling a virtual Red Bag through an online monetary donation at the Purolator website. Non-perishable food donations can also be brought to any Purolator Shipping Centre across Canada.
