1,173 driving charges within 10 days near schools: DRPS

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) ‘In the Zone’ campaign results are in – and include five speed driving charges near schools.

After an extended absence from the daily school routine, DRPS wanted to ensure that the return to school this year was a safe one for all students across Durham Region. The DRPS Traffic Services Branch, in conjunction with divisional traffic safety coordinators and general patrol officers from across the region participated in the annual ‘In the Zone’ campaign. This enhanced enforcement initiative with zero tolerance targeted school and community zones from September 7-17.

The goal of the annual enforcement campaign was to ensure high officer visibility and proactive enforcement in and around school zones during the first week back to school.

Despite high police visibility, this year’s campaign resulted in 1,173 charges issued for various driving offences in and around schools. This included five charges for stunt driving.

DRPS would like to remind drivers to slow down and pay attention to the roads, especially in school zones. Officers will continue traffic enforcement in and around community safety zones on an ongoing basis.
