13-year old Noreen missing for 60 years may have run away

New information was released yesterday about Noreen Anne Greenley, who went missing 60 years ago from Bowmanville.

Family and police yesterday marked her disappearance. The then 13-year old was last seen on September 14, 1963.

The case has been kept open, and new information released yesterday indicates Noreen may have run away. The 13-year old was pregnant at that time.

Family and police are appealing to anyone with information relating to her disappearance, and especially about Mary and Gary Benson, a boat called ‘Mary Bell’ and its owner ‘Franko’.

Detective Sergeant (DS) Brad Corner said several phone numbers were identified that were of interest in the investigation. The owners of these phone numbers have not been identified. If any of these phone numbers are familiar to you, please contact police.

On September 14, 1963, 13-year-old, Noreen Anne Greenley left her Bowmanville home and has not been seen or heard from since. She was last reported at King Street and Waverly Road waiting for a bus around 11-11:30 pm. She never got on to the bus, said DS Corner.

Multiple unsuccessful ground searches were conducted. The case was handed over to the Ontario Provincial Police in 1974. Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) took over the investigation in 1995 at which time they investigated numerous theories relating to her disappearance. Investigators have followed different investigative avenues in an attempt to locate her without success.

New sequence of events

In 1968, Noreen’s father told the police that his daughter went to Oshawa where she stayed for two weeks. She then travelled to Whitby where she stayed for about three weeks with a couple named Mary and Gary Benson.

She and another girl then crossed Lake Ontario in a 40-foot cabin cruiser called the ‘Mary Bell’ owned by a man named ‘Franko’. This boat travelled from Oshawa across the lake to Rochester. It is believed that Noreen settled into a motel or cabins in Syracuse, New York.

Information was received that she was pregnant at that time, and she later gave birth to a baby boy, explained DS Corner.

He said there is no information on the child. Noreen’s father is deceased. His narrative was later corroborated by police notes taken at the time.

DS Corner said DRPS is in touch with the media arm of American police.

He said Noreen may have left with no intention of returning. However, there are other lines of inquiries, he said without elaborating.

DS Corner said it may be Noreen is deceased, but hoped she is alive.

He, and Noreen’s two sisters and niece, appealed to anyone who knows her location to contact their local police service. In Durham Region, a dedicated tip line has been set up at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5444.
