13-year old targeted via Snapchat in child luring case

A male is facing charges following a child pornography and luring investigation in Ajax.

On Friday, November 8, members of the West Division School Liaison Office (SLO) responded to a report of a suspicious person at a public school in the area of Harkins Drive and Delaney Drive. School staff received information that a 13-year-old female student was planning to meet up with a male she believed was 16-years-old. Police searched the area but did not locate the suspect.

Investigators from the Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE), with the assistance of the E-Crimes Unit, and Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) identified the suspect and attended his residence in Scarborough. The suspect was located inside the residence and taken into custody. A search warrant was conducted at the residence for electronic devices, with the assistance of a police K9 unit, police said.

They said the victim was initially contacted by the suspect through the app Snapchat, with the username: ‘txjan02’.

A 22-year-old male from Scarborough was charged and held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.

Police are concerned there may be other victims and are requesting anyone with information to come forward about this or similar incidents, and are asked to contact D/Cst. Mayhew of the Internet Child Exploitation Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5502.
