Police alert on spike in nighttime backdoor break-and-enters

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is advising residents of a “large spike” in residential break-and-enters across the region, with suspects primarily targeting homes backing onto green spaces and parks.

According to police, suspects are gaining entry through rear sliding doors, with most incidents occurring between midnight and 4 am. The intruders have been targeting high-end jewelry and currency, often parking a distance away and approaching the homes on foot through nearby green spaces.

Police Prevention Tips

DRPS is urging homeowners to take precautions, particularly those with valuable items in their homes. Recommended measures include:

  • Storing high-end jewelry and cash in a secure safe or safety deposit box.
  • Locking all windows and doors.
  • Installing exterior lighting and security cameras at both front and rear entrances.
  • Using a security system or audible alarm.
  • Installing motion-activated lights and shatterproof glass film on doors and windows.
  • Having a neighbor monitor the home when away for extended periods.

Authorities are asking residents to report any suspicious activity by calling 911.
