Our community feels for each other and the most recent example is the $24,500+ raised so far for the family of a 11-year old severely autistic child tragically lost in a trailer fire in Oshawa.
The fund raising target is $28,000, and has been organized by an aunt and a family friend.
On October 18, a horrific fire broke out in the trailer where dad Braeden Gaunt, mom Amanda Dunn and son Bentley lived. The youngest daughter, Madison, was nearby and was the first to run to help. She called 911, and emergency crews arrived within minutes, says Lesley Barnes, aunt to Braeden.
“Madison and Braeden did everything humanly possible to reach Bentley before 15 firefighters took over. Madison suffered second-degree burns, smoke inhalation, and trauma that will stay with her for a long time. Braeden sustained severe smoke inhalation and third-degree burns on both arms — the same arms that always protected his son,” said Barnes.
Bentley tragically passed away in the devastating fire.
Bentley had severe autism, and Braeden’s patience and love never wavered. He worked hard and often went without to make sure Bentley had what he needed. He was the kind of dad who gave all of his heart, every single day, said auntie Barnes.

Amanda’s Only Son
Bentley had profound autism and was the absolute light of Amanda’s life, says Kaylee, a long-time friend of Amanda Dunn, who tragically lost her only child.
“She devoted herself fully to giving him every opportunity he could enjoy, and he thrived surrounded by her love. Bentley was deeply cherished by everyone who knew him — his family, teachers, therapists, friends, camp counsellors, and many others in the community who were touched by his bright spirit and one-of-a-kind personality,” said Kaylee.
“This unimaginable loss has left Amanda and Bentley’s dad, Braeden, completely heartbroken. Though Amanda and Braeden were no longer together, they were a strong and loving team for Bentley. Together, they gave him an incredible life filled with joy, adventures, and beautiful memories,” Kaylee added.
