Three Oshawa councillors have reached out to the Ontario Ministry of Transport (MTO) – through the Region of Durham – asking for answers to ongoing and proposed roadworks.
Southern Oshawa is beset with roadworks from MTO, Metrolinx and the Region of Durham including the widening of Highway 401 to ten lanes as well as a two-year upgrade of the Simcoe Street rail bridge.
Councillors John Gray, Tito-Dante Marimpietri and Brian Nicholson have written a joint letter to the Region of Durham on the scheduling of work for the bridges under Highway 401 at Park Road South and at Cubert Street.
“We have asked regional staff to reach out to MTO to seek a response to the questions in the letter,” said Nicholson.
The questions include:
- Is the work currently being done on the Highway 401-expansion program going to work through the upcoming winter months?
- If not, when will the work cease and when is it projected to restart?
- If the work is not going to be ongoing through the winter months, is it possible that the currently closed roads at Park Road South and Cubert Street be reopened to public transit and community use during that time frame?
The councillors said “one can understand closing the roads while work is ongoing, but if there is an opportunity to reopen those roads while work is suspended, this should definitely happen”.
