$47mn Ontario grant to expand Oshawa water plant capacity

The Region of Durham is the successful recipient of a Housing Enabling Water System Fund grant from the Province of Ontario.

The $34.9 million investment will support a $47.8 million rehabilitation project at the Oshawa Water Supply Plant to create additional system capacity, said a region statement.

It pointed out that Durham is experiencing significant growth and regional capital plans reflect the major infrastructure investments required to welcome that growth.

The Oshawa Water Supply Plant rehabilitation project is a crucial first step to enable expansion projects at two other regional water supply plants, creating extra system capacity. Together these expansion projects will support the construction of an estimated 182,000 homes.

The region did not name the two other regional water supply plants.
