5% cap on Durham Region property tax rise recommended

Durham Regional Council has approved the 2023 Property Tax Supported Business Plans and Budget Guideline, which establishes a property tax levy target increase not to exceed five per cent for 2023.

In 2022, Durham Region property tax increase was 2.6 per cent. Whitby has proposed a 6 per cent overall 2023 budget increase, Oshawa has approved a 4.98 tx increase and Clarington proposes a 3.75 per cent increase (see below).

This tax levy guideline provides for increased investments in critical frontline core service areas, while meeting current economic challenges such as rising inflation and accounting for the future growth of our community, said a region statement.

It said this guideline assists in finalizing the 2023 Business Plans and Budget, which will be reviewed by various standing committees between March 7 and 9, by the Finance and Administration Committee on March 21 and finally by Regional Council for approval on March 29.

“The approved 2023 Business Plans and Budget Guideline is proof of the region’s commitment to deliver and maintain safe, reliable and financially sustainable services for our residents. We are proud to continue to invest in our community, and the Regional services that drive them,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and CEO.
