Clarington Council recently carried a motion to add 58 more residential units to Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge known as The Lodge.
The Lodge currently provides essential housing, and community support to older adults at Orono in the Municipality of Clarington. It currently contains 41 residential units.
The expansion is for an additional 58 single-bedroom units that would be ‘affordable’ as they will be provided at or below CMHC Average Market Rent, said a municipal statement.
The Lodge has identified a need for financial support to help offset upfront development‑related costs associated with advancing the proposed expansion. The required replacement and upgrading of the septic system is essential to support the proposed new units and to maintain the long‑term viability of the existing and new units.
Council resolved to assist the expansion of The Lodge by:
- Waiving application fees for the required Zoning By-Law Amendment and Site Plan;
- Provide a grant-in-lieu of the required Building Permit application fees;
- Provide financial support in the amount of $255,000 as identified in staff report
The financial support for the expansion will be funded by Clarington’s 2024 Build Faster Fund, as approved by the Province of Ontario and any remaining amount be funded from the Clarington Affordable Housing reserve fund.

If low-income/OAS levels can afford these places, then I’ll believe that they’re affordable. Too many retirement homes charge more than a monthly mortgage payment.
I wonder if these 58 units will only be for our seniors.
