600+ people seen on the ice at Frenchman’s Bay

City of Pickering yesterday said its By-law Enforcement officers responded to reports of 600+ people on the ice at Frenchman’s Bay.

“To make matters worse, a large part of this crowd are not adhering to physical distancing guidelines,” said a city tweet.

It alerted Durham Regional Policce Service and said Municipal Law Enforcement Services will be patrolling these areas to enforce all parking restrictions.

“Please note, temporary no-parking signage will be installed on one side of the road on Sunrise Ave., Mink St., Oklahoma Dr., Leaside St., Yeremi St., Breezy Dr., and Essa Cres. to reduce overcrowding while ensuring access to emergency vehicles,” said another city tweet.

A friendly reminder that while outdoor activities are permitted, it is important that you follow all mandatory public health guidelines, and be extremely cautious around frozen bodies of water. Venturing out, even on ice that appears thick, is hazardous.

The city pointed out that “No ice is safe ice”. Venturing out – even on ice that appears thick – is extremely hazardous. Make smart choices and always take precautions around frozen bodies of water.

Meanwhile, Durham Regional Police also said outdoor activities are encouraged but please be mindful of Public Health guidelines and keep outdoor safety in mind especially on ichttps://durhampost.ca/3-new-covid-deaths-over-the-last-2-dayse or open waters.
