As part of the commitment to Durham Vision Zero, The Regional Municipality of Durham is making it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross the street with pedestrian crossovers. Identified by signs, unique pavement markings, and marked yield bars showing where drivers must stop; some crossovers also have flashing lights that are activated by pedestrian push buttons.
When: Pedestrian crossovers are currently in operation across Durham Region, with more crossovers scheduled to be constructed in the Spring.
Where: Warranted intersections across Durham Region where there are not any street signs or traffic signals, and at selected right-turn channels.
Why: Pedestrian crossovers are intended to increase the level of safety for pedestrians crossing the street at locations where there are not any stop signs or traffic signals. Drivers and cyclists should look for the “Stop for pedestrians” sign and must come to a full stop if pedestrians are waiting to cross or lights are flashing. Drivers and cyclists must remain stopped until pedestrians have completely cleared the crosswalk. Drivers who do not stop for pedestrians can be fined of up to $1,000 and four demerit points.
