80 kmh gusts forecast, power outages started last night

Strong winds expected Saturday, according to a Special Weather statement from Environment Canada.

Winds gusting between 70 and 80kmh will increase the potential of reduced visibility in blowing snow, it said.

Environment Canada said an Alberta Clipper will bring strong winds to southern Ontario on Saturday. With the passage of a cold front in the morning, very strong northwesterly winds are expected to develop with gusts between 70 and 80kmh possible. Strong winds will weaken gradually Saturday evening.

It said loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may also cause tree branches to break.

Power Outages

Strormy winds started last night, and Elexicon Energy reported traffic lights may be out in areas of south Ajax. “Please treat these intersections as all-way stops and proceed through the intersection with caution. Thank you.”

Elexicon reported a large outage affecting approximately 3,800 customers in south Ajax. “Investigation is underway. We apologize for the inconvenience. Will provide updates as soon as they become available.”
