Extreme Cold Alert: 15-20 cm of snow projected

Snowfall warning is in effect for Durham Region, said Environment Canada, projecting snowfall of 15 to 20 cm.

It yesterday afternoon said snow, at times heavy, will fall through to Friday morning. It will cause near zero visibility at times, as well as icy and slippery surfaces.

Mixed precipitation has transitioned completely over to snow and will continue to fall heavy at times. Snow is expected to end early Friday morning.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” said the alert.

Following the Environment Canada snowfall warning, Durham Health has issued an extreme cold weather alert.

The extreme cold weather alert will be effect from 7 pm Thursday, February 17 until 7 pm Friday, February 18.

Weather Impact

Oshawa announced the closure of Harmony Trail at Adelaide Underpass due to flooding from the rains. It said the trail will be closed until further notice.

Uxbridge too has declared a significant weather event, saying forecasted melting snow, mixed precipitation and wind have the potential to impact township road and sidewalk maintenance.

“Roads and intersections may be snow covered and slippery. Residents are asked to drive according to the weather conditions,” said an advisory.
