The Municipality of Clarington officially broke ground on the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre on Thursday, May 1, marking the start of construction on a long-awaited community project.
This marks the beginning of Phase 1 of the project, which is expected to open in 2026. No updated investment details were provided.
The new facility will transform the former Bowmanville Indoor Soccer Centre into a multi-sport destination serving residents of all ages.
According to the municipality, Phase 1 will include:
- A FIFA-sized multi-sport dome with an indoor walking track
- Two FIBA-sized basketball courts, adaptable for net sports such as pickleball, tennis, and volleyball
- A refrigerated outdoor skating trail designed for year-round programming, including summer events
- Multi-purpose rooms for activities such as yoga, strength training, and children’s programs
- The existing lacrosse bowl will remain on site
Phase 2 of the project will introduce a new aquatics centre to meet community demand and provide additional space for swimming and wellness programs. Future additions will also include more multi-purpose rooms to further enhance recreational offerings and strengthen community connections.
In addition to the new facilities, the project includes upgrades to surrounding infrastructure, such as landscaping improvements, a new road, and an updated intersection on Baseline Road. Access to Clarington Fields will remain open during construction, with parking and entry available via Green Road.
The South Bowmanville Recreation Centre is intended to be a hub for sports, wellness, and community engagement in one of Clarington’s fastest-growing areas.
