3-year part Columbus Road closure to support Brooklin growth

Two significant road projects are set to impact drivers in Whitby, with both local and regional governments announcing upcoming closures and lane restrictions.

The Town of Whitby has advised that Columbus Road, between Country Lane and Cedarbrook Trail, will be closed until 2028 to support a major road expansion project tied to Brooklin’s future growth. Work is expected to take about three years. During the closure, detour routes will be posted, and all north-south roads that intersect Columbus Road will remain open.

According to the town, this multi-year improvement project is critical in preparing for Whitby’s population growth, which is projected to increase from about 140,000 to 190,000 by 2031. The road expansion will help ensure that new residential areas are connected to reliable infrastructure, including roads, sidewalks, multi-use paths, and bridges.

Meanwhile, Durham Region has announced lane restrictions on Baldwin Street South (Regional Highway 12) from July 7 to August 20. The affected stretch runs from north of Taunton Road East (Regional Road 4) to south of Garden Street.

These restrictions are necessary to complete road resurfacing, and the Region notes that unfavourable weather could impact the construction schedule.
