Facebook Marketplace meet-up ends in armed robbery

Durham police are investigating a street-level robbery in Pickering after a man allegedly pulled a gun and fled with a piece of jewelry during a fraudulent Facebook Marketplace transaction.

According to investigators, the incident happened around 8 pm on Monday, July 7, in the area of Marinet Crescent and Hillcrest Road. The victim had arranged to meet a potential buyer for a piece of jewelry they had listed online.

During the exchange, the suspect handed the victim an envelope in return for the item. After the victim gave over the jewelry, they discovered the envelope was empty. When confronted, the suspect pulled out a handgun and fled the scene in a dark-coloured vehicle. No injuries were reported.

The suspect is described as a Black male, between 18 and 20 years old, about 5’7” with a slim build.
