Residents warned about door-to-door water filter scams

The Region of Durham is reminding residents that it does not sell or endorse water filters or water treatment equipment, following reports of door-to-door salespeople offering to test water or install filtration systems.

In some cases, residents have also received phone calls from individuals requesting access to their homes to test water or inspect water service lines. These solicitations are not affiliated with the Region.

Durham Region supplies safe drinking water and is currently conducting cathodic protection work in South Oshawa to maintain and extend the life of its water system. This testing does not require homeowners to install any water filtration systems.

To help residents protect themselves from scams, the Region advises the following:

  • Ask for ID: All Regional staff and authorized contractors carry photo identification.
  • Check for pre-arranged visits: Regional employees will not visit without prior notice via letter or appointment.
  • Do not feel pressured: Never feel obligated to sign contracts or allow anyone into your home on the spot.
  • Verify legitimacy: Call 311 (within Durham Region) or 1-800-372-1102 to confirm if a visit or phone call is legitimate.
  • Protect your information: Never provide personal details to unsolicited callers or visitors.

Information about water quality testing is available by contacting the Works Department at 311, or by visiting durham.ca/Water. For details on your rights when signing contracts at your door, visit ontario.ca/DoorToDoor.
