Firearm seized after Highway 401 collision in Clarington

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say a firearm was seized following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Clarington.

According to OPP, the incident occurred around 12:42 am on Thursday, August 14, on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Bennett Road. At the time, Whitby OPP officers were on scene for a separate police investigation, with the left shoulder and left lane blocked by police and an unoccupied blocker truck protecting the area.

Police say a red sedan struck the blocker truck from behind. No injuries were reported. The driver allegedly attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers.

During the investigation, police say they found a firearm. A 35-year-old Markham resident has since been charged with multiple firearms-related offences, as well as dangerous operation.

The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
