Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after hate-motivated graffiti was located on a bench along the waterfront trail in Ajax.
On Tuesday, September 2, members of West Division responded to a call after anti-Muslim graffiti was located on a bench along the waterfront trail in the area of Lakeview Boulevard and Poplar Avenue.
A similar incident was reported at the same location in early August.
Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact investigators.
“We recognize the impact these incidents can have on our community, particularly the Muslim community. Acts that target or instill fear in any group are unacceptable and are taken very seriously. We remain committed to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of everyone in our community,” said a police statement.
Hate Crime Not a Standalone Charge
Hate crime is not a charge in the Criminal Code of Canada. There are four offences in the code that specifically pertain to hate. Consultations will take place with the Crown Attorney’s Office to determine whether hate was an aggravating factor. “Hate Crime” is not a standalone charge; instead, if a crime is motivated by hate, that factor can be considered during sentencing to increase the severity of the penalty, police said.
