Durham Police yesterday said five suspects have been arrested and charged in connection with Project Egypt, an investigation targeting an organized auto theft trafficking group from Quebec.
Organized gangs from Quebec have been targeting Durham and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for some time (see related story below).
In June, members of Project Attire – the DRPS Auto Theft Unit (ATU) began Project Egypt – an auto theft trafficking investigation. Investigators identified a group of suspects operating an organized auto theft trafficking group from Quebec.
On September 17, investigators executed a search warrant at a residence in Mississauga. Five suspects were arrested and investigators seized offence related property found inside the residence. Eight stolen vehicles were recovered during the course of this investigation, police said.
One previous search warrant in Quebec resulted in the identification of approximately 25 stolen vehicles that were re-vinned.
All five suspects reside in Quebec and travelled to Greater Toronto Area where they stole vehicles.
The suspects aged between 19- and 32-years of age, were charged and held for bail hearings. Names and further details available at www.drps.ca.
Project Attire is DRPS’ response to Ontario’s Preventing Auto Theft (PAT) Grant program, which is designed to support new and enhanced crime-fighting measures.
