Airbnb bans four who stole $250,000 jewelry from rental

The four persons who have been charged with stealing jewelry worth $250,000 from a Clarington home, have been removed from the Airbnb list, according to a company spokesperson.

Even though the stolen jewelry was recovered according to Durham Police, the host-owner is still covered under Airbnb’s AirCover, the spokesperson said.

“The reported behaviour has no place on Airbnb, and these guests were removed from the platform. We are supporting our host with their AirCover request, and we stand ready to assist the Durham Regional Police in their investigation.”

AirCover for Hosts includes Host Damage Protection, which provides up to US$3 million protection in the event of property damage by an Airbnb guest to a host’s home or belongings during the guest’s stay, which includes cover for income loss, art and valuables, cars and boats, pet damage, and deep cleaning.

Durham Police has not said if all or part of the stolen jewelry was recovered.

Four persons hired an Airbnb in Bowmanville, in the Municipality of Clarington for a night, and after they left, the host found jewelry worth $250,000 missing. The police were alerted and the suspects were found by the K9 team and forced to surrender.
