Ajax Crash Update: Elderly driver crossed into oncoming traffic

A 78-year-old woman has died following a head-on collision in Ajax, according to Durham Regional Police.

Police say officers from West Division responded to reports of a multi-vehicle crash around 1 pm on Wednesday, April 16, in the area of Kingston Road West and Elizabeth Street.

Investigators say a grey Honda HR-V was heading east on Kingston Road West when it crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a silver Dodge Journey. A red Mazda Protégé, also travelling westbound, then struck the Dodge Journey.

The driver of the Honda HR-V, a 78-year-old woman, was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The woman driving the Dodge Journey was transported to a Toronto trauma centre with serious injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Durham police’s Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene and is continuing the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Riley at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5216.
