Durham Police yesterday said a Whitby man was arrested shortly after robbing a convenience store over the weekend.

On December 19 just before noon, a male entered the Red Maple Convenience store on Dundas Street West in Whitby and demanded the employee lend him some cash. When the request was refused, the male pushed the victim out of the way and attempted to open the cash register. He grabbed a small quantity of cash sitting on top of the register and ran out of the store, police said.

Police were called and searched the area. They located the suspect and arrested him about one hour after the robbery.

Leon Tyrell, age 36, of Dunlop Street West in Whitby has been charged with: Robbery; Fail to Comply – Undertaking; and Fail to Comply – Probation x4. He was held for a bail hearing.

Arrest in Uxbridge shooting

On December 19 at about 8:55 pm, a 19-year-old male entered the local hospital in Uxbridge suffering from a gunshot wound. Police were called and investigators attended the scene and spoke with the victim.

Investigators ascertained that the victim invited the suspect, who was armed with a firearm, over to his residence. While the suspect was handling the prohibited firearm, there was a discharge which struck the victim. The victim suffered from a serious but non-life threatening injury.

Police contacted the friend and located him at a residence in the area of Reach Street and Concession Road 7 in Uxbridge, where he was arrested while still in possession of the firearm.

Keegan Jenkins-Millar, age 19, of Princess Street in Cobourg has been charged with: Assault with a Weapon; Careless Storage; Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose; Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm; Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Car; Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm or with Readily Accessible Ammunition; Tampering with Serial Number-Possessing a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number; Using Firearm in the Commission of an Offence; Careless Use of a Firearm; and Pointing a Firearm. He was held for a bail hearing.
