EXCLUSIVE! Time Canada had a Prime Minister from 905: Erin O’Toole

‘Bowmanville Boy’ says Ottawa-knows-best approach not working for GTA

Durham Post wanted to know what ‘Bowmanville Boy’ Erin O’Toole, leader of Canada’s Conservatives, had to say about the Riding of Durham [which he represents in parliament], the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Canada — if he were to become the next Prime Minister of Canada.

Here are his exclusive responses to our queries.

Durham Post: What will it mean for the Riding of Durham if you became Canada’s next Prime Minister?
Erin O’Toole: I grew up in Bowmanville, Ontario. My dad worked at the local GM plant in Oshawa, I proudly attended Bowmanville High School, and chose to raise my family here. But like many families, I’m worried about the future.
Far too many people across the region are trapped in gridlock every day. Far too many people, especially young people, are priced out of the housing market. And too many are already struggling with mortgage and car payments, buying gas and groceries – while Justin Trudeau drives up the cost of everything with his out-of-control spending, borrowing and debt.
The Ottawa-knows-best approach to housing, transit, inflation, and health care is not working for GTA workers or families. With Justin Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh, you can expect more of the same. But there is another choice. We can make life better — and more affordable — for GTA residents and all Canadians.

Durham Post: What will it mean for the GTA?
Erin O’Toole: Justin Trudeau’s ‘Ottawa-knows-best’ approach isn’t working for Canadian families. Nearly one in five Canadians live in the GTA. We need a Prime Minister who personally knows and understands the challenges facing the families and communities in the region.
Growing up in the GTA, in the community of Bowmanville, I was raised with middle-class values of hard work and helping your neighbour. For years, I’ve been fighting to make the GTA the best place to live, work, and raise a family – and I want that dream to be a reality for all Canadians.
All politics is local, and it’s time Canada had a Prime Minister from the 905, who personally knows and understands the challenges facing our communities. Only Canada’s Conservatives have a plan to secure the future for workers and families across the GTA.

Durham Post: What will it mean for the Golden Horseshoe?
Erin O’Toole: As Prime Minister, I will work tirelessly to build our country up. Canada is the best country in the world – but I’m also worried about what our kids’ future looks like.
The cost of everything is going up – grocery bills are up five per cent and gas prices have skyrocketed. With inflation at the highest level in nearly 20 years and rising, families are struggling to make ends meet. Canada’s Conservatives have a detailed plan to get inflation under control, lower prices, and make life more affordable for families in the Golden Horseshoe.

Durham Post: Last, but not the least, what will it mean for Canada and all Canadians?
Erin O’Toole: As Prime Minister, I will work tirelessly to build our country up. Canada is the best country in the world – and I am so proud that Rebecca and I have the privilege of raising our family here – but I’m also worried about what our kids’ future looks like.
We are seeing a national unity crisis stemming from ideological policies that have pitted one part of the country against another. The Liberal government has chosen winners and losers, which jobs are worth saving, which industries deserve support, and which regions they will support. With Canada’s Recovery Plan, we will ensure that Canadians in every region and every sector have the economic recovery they deserve, and Canadians can get back to work.
