Brock intends to repeal township ATV by-law

The Township of Brock has announced its intention to repeal ATV (all-terrain vehicle) By-law No. 1954-2005-PP, which permits and regulates the operation of off-road vehicles (ORV) upon highways under the jurisdiction of the township.

A township statement said by repealing the by-law, the operation of off-road vehicles (ATV’s) will be regulated under the Highway Traffic Act Ontario Regulation 316/03 and subject to enforcement by local police.

It said in general, off-road vehicles (ATV’s) must be:

  • Registered
  • Display a licence plate
  • Insured under a motor vehicle liability policy
  • Travel at speeds less than the posted limits:
    • Road speed limit over 50kmh – max ORV speed limit 50kmh
    • Road speed limit 50kmh or less – max ORV speed limit 20kmh
  • Must wear an approved motorcycle helmet
  • Drivers for on-road riding must:
    • Be at least 16 years old
    • Hold at least a valid G2 or M2 licence
    • Wear a seat belt where provided
  • Drivers for off-road riding must:
    • Be at least 12 years old, unless directly supervised by an adult or driving on land occupied by the owner of the ORV.

The Township of Brock does not have any formal or organized ORV trail system.

The council will host a public meeting to obtain input on this proposal. The meeting will take place virtually on Monday, January 30 at 6 pm.
