Brock rejects strong mayor powers amid mayoral vacancy

The council of the Corporation of the Township of Brock has rejected the strong mayor powers granted to it by the Province of Ontario.

The Township of Scugog too has rejected strong mayoral powers (see below).

According to information from Brock Township, council is requesting that the province repeal the legislation, or offer municipalities the option to opt out of strong mayor powers.

The rejection comes shortly after Mayor Walter Schummer’s sudden resignation, announced on May 26, due to personal reasons. In a public statement, Schummer said his decision was “the most difficult decision of [his] life,” citing ongoing health concerns and the need to focus on personal well-being (see below).

Until a new mayor is elected, Deputy Mayor Mike Jubb is serving as Acting Mayor.

The statement was included in highlights from Monday’s Council meeting. The provincial legislation gives mayors enhanced authority over budgets, staffing, and certain decisions.
