Burn ban in effect in Scugog from Friday midnight

Scugog yesterday announced that effective Saturday, April 9th at 12:01 am, Scugog Fire is implementing a township-wide burn ban.

“While the fire index rating is low in general, local circumstances are such that should a wildfire happen, Scugog residents, properties and firefighters will be at risk. This became obvious this past weekend when a fire occurred. Even though there may be rain or localized flooding, dry grass and debris catch fire easily and the flames spread quickly. Residents are advised to monitor the Township website, www.scugog.ca/fire for updates,” said Mark Berney, Fire Chief.

No general or recreational burning is permitted during a burn ban. Some agricultural burning will be permitted during this time, with special conditions in effect. The ban will remain in place until further notice, said a township statement.

It said there will be zero tolerance for general and recreational burning during the burn ban. Under Part 4, Enforcement and Penalties of the Open-Air Burning By-law 63-21, those having a fire during the burn ban can be charged under the Provincial Offences Act and will also be responsible for the costs associated with Fire Services response.

In anticipation of the ban being lifted, Fire Services will continue to sell burn permits at this time. Permits are available at www.scugog.ca/burnpermit. Applying in advance allows residents to avoid application delays.

Quick Facts:

  • Outdoor fire pits, burn barrels, chimineas, and other portable open air fire devices are generally intended for backyard bonfires and are not designed for cooking. These items are not permitted to be used during a burn ban.
  • Outdoor appliances listed for use in Canada that utilize natural gas, electricity, propane, or charcoal as a fuel supply are permitted to be used during the burn ban.
