The car that ploughed into a Pickering bus shelter, had veered off course after a collision with two other vehicles, police said in an update.
A 31-year-old woman died and a man was seriously injured after a vehicle crashed into a bus shelter in Pickering on Wednesday afternoon, according to Durham police.
In an update about the crash, Durham Regional Police said officers responded to a multi-vehicle collision involving pedestrians around 2:30 pm near Kingston Road and Brock Road (see below).
According to investigators, a white Chevrolet Cruze was heading westbound when it was involved in a collision with two other westbound vehicles. The Cruze then veered off the roadway, crashing into a bus shelter and striking two pedestrians. It re-entered the road and hit a third westbound vehicle.
One of the pedestrians, a 31-year-old woman, was being transported by EMS to a waiting Ornge air ambulance when she was pronounced dead, police said. A 26-year-old man was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
No other injuries were reported, and all drivers involved remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
The Durham Regional Police Service Collision Investigations Unit attended the scene, and nearby roads were closed for several hours while evidence was gathered.
