Charged for providing therapy under false pretences

Durham Police have charged a female with fraud-related offences after she provided unlicensed psychotherapy sessions to multiple members of the community.

Between May 31 and June 21, the suspect provided unlicensed psychotherapy sessions at a clinic located in Whitby. The suspect was not certified with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers to provide mental health care. She provided a total of 26 sessions using a false identity, said a police statement.

The 32-year old from Vaughan is charged with numerous fraud-related charges, and may have used the aliases when providing the sessions.

The clinic and the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers have cooperated with investigators in relation to this investigation. Police also encourage members of the community seeking mental health assistance to review the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers to identify potential unregulated practitioners (www.ocswssw.org/public/unregulated-practitioners/).

Investigators would like to speak with anyone who received sessions. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to Central West Division Criminal Investigation Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1825.
