Police investigate threat toward Durham school

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday moved in to investigate a threat to a school in Whitby.

Police have been made aware of a threat toward Henry Street High School. At this time the threat has not been substantiated and there are no safety concerns for the students and employees of the school, said a police tweet.

The school also tweeted: “Our number 1 priority is the safety of our students and staff. DRPS is currently at Henry St. as a precaution due to a concern that was raised.”

Following the investigation, the police concluded it was a hoax.

“Officers have investigated this incident and have determined there is no validity to the threat at Henry Street HS. There are no immediate safety concerns for staff and students,” it said.

The school also tweeted that the police have concluded their investigation. “All staff and students are safe. We are back to normal operating procedures. DRPS will remain onsite for a while to support our students and staff.”

The school had another incident last Monday (November 28), when just after dismissal, 911 dispatch received a call from Henry Street.

“Since we could not respond back (phones still not working), emergency responders were sent to investigate. Everyone was safe and we are working with the region to determine why this false alarm occurred.,” said the school.

Phones were out for Durham District School Board (DDSB) schools following a cyber attack on the board’s systems on Friday.
