Two children from Whitby suffered serious injuries following a two-vehicle collision in Oshawa on Wednesday evening, according to Durham Regional Police.
Police say the crash occurred around 9:10 pm on May 14 near Taunton Road and Stevenson Road North. A 2000 Ford Mustang and a 2016 Hyundai Elantra were involved in what was described as a T-bone collision.
According to police, the driver of the Mustang fled the scene on foot after the crash but was quickly located and arrested by responding officers. He has been charged with Failing to Remain at the Scene of a Collision and Impaired Operation of a Conveyance Causing Bodily Harm.
Emergency services, including Durham EMS and Whitby Fire, responded to the scene. Three passengers in the Mustang remained at the site and were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The four occupants of the Hyundai Elantra sustained varying degrees of injuries. A 41-year-old male driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries, and a 33-year-old female passenger, who had to be extricated from the vehicle, was transported with serious injuries.
Two boys, aged 10 and 5, were also in the Elantra and suffered extensive injuries. They were taken to a Toronto-area hospital, where the 10-year-old is reported to be in stable condition, and the 5-year-old remains in serious condition.
The Collision Investigation Unit from Durham’s Traffic Services Branch attended the scene and closed the roadway for several hours to conduct a full investigation.
A 29-year-old male, from Oshawa, was charged and held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
