Clarington residential sector sees 32% drop in 2021

Building permit activity in Clarington was very strong throughout 2021 and has increased during the first quarter of 2022, said the municipality.

It published the following tables that provide a year-end update on the building permit activity for 2021, and include a comparison to the 2019 permit activity.

In 2021, 1,103 building permits were issued. Although the residential sector was down in 2021, it continued to be the strongest, said the municipal council.

* Residential refers to construction and permit activity resulting from the creation of all new residential dwelling units and accessory structures (detached garage, sheds, etc.) and additions (decks, new additions to a home, etc.).

From January 1 to December 31, Clarington received 1,114 applications, and 898 (81 per cent) were complete applications. For the complete application, the following table reports the median number of days it took for the Building Division to either issue the permit or notify the applicant why the application was being refused.
