Cloned Town of Ajax website shut down

Town of Ajax officials yesterday said late evening of December 10, they were informed that a public website had been created using the town’s corporate address and contact information without the town’s consent.

The website in question was not known to the town nor affiliated with the town in any way, said Rachael Wraith, Manager of Corporate Communications, Town of Ajax.

“Due to the suspicious nature of the site, the town took immediate action to notify the web hosting service, and the provider has since locked the website. In addition, we made the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario aware of the issue as the site was collecting personal information and soliciting donations,” she pointed out.

The town complies with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and follows best practices around collection of personal information. In the interest of public safety and security, we recommend that residents do not share their personal information on unknown sites, she added.
